Porcelain veneers
What
are Veneers?
Veneers
are composed of an ultra-thin layer of ceramic, made to be an enamel
substitute. They are bonded directly to
your remaining tooth structure, and look, feel, and function like your natural
teeth. Veneers can improve your smile by giving you a brighter, straighter,
whiter smile in as little as 2 appointments!
The
semi-translucent nature of veneers allows your team of Dentist Austin specialists to recreateyour natural smile.
While they’re not suitable for every patient, porcelain veneers are the most
aesthetic, and conservative, alternative for a variety of dental conditions
involving the front teeth, including:
- Dark, discolored teeth
- Shifted, rotated, or crooked teeth
- Worn, chipped teeth
- Small teeth (congential peg-shaped teeth)
- Diastemas (spaces between teeth)
- Unsightly, stained or worn-out fillings
Round
Rock restorative specialist (prosthodontist), Dr. Ace Jovanovski offers
beautifully engineered porcelain veneers, direct from his own personal lab, to
patients from the Austin area and greater Central Texas.
Advantages
and benefits of Dental Veneers
There
are many benefits and advantages to having porcelain veneers placed on your
front teeth:
- A conservative amount of tooth structure is removed during the porcelain veneer procedure. In certain circumstances, when the tooth is smaller than average size, no tooth reduction is needed.
- Quick results: Often done in as little as 2 visits, the new smile can be achieved in as little as 2 weeks. Dr. Ace has his own laboratory that can customize the smile you’ve always wanted.
- A “natural” look is achieved; in fact, porcelain veneers are some of the most aesthetic restorations in dentistry. Porcelain resists the classic stains of coffee, tea, smoking, and very well can look as good at the day they were put in for years to come.
- Durable, long lasting solution: the average lifespan of veneers can be expected to give a decade, or more, of service. Although not common, improper patient compliance can result in complications such as, chipping, de-bonding, repair, and replacement.
- Customized for you. YOU dictate the color, size, and shape of the teeth! The personal smile that you have always wanted is just a few steps away with Dr. Ace.
How
are Cosmetic Veneers different from Resin Bonding or Dental Crowns?
Resin
Bonding is a plastic-like filling material that is used directly in the mouth
to cover the front surface of teeth. Today, we generally use bonding only to
fill in small surfaces or cavities and repair tiny chips or cavities in teeth. Veneers
are made of a more durable, less stain resistant, material. A full crown is needed when a substantial
amount of the tooth structure, or integrity, has been lost (think of a 360
degree veneer). Cosmetic veneers can be
placed on teeth to make your smile look more natural and beautiful.
How
are Porcelain Veneers prepared and placed?
A
preview appointment, or “mock-up”, may be necessary prior to any treatment…depending
on the patient-doctor expectations.
Typically,at the first appointment with Round Rock specialist, Dr. Ace
Jovanovski, the teeth are lightly reshaped for the dental veneers and an impression
(mold) is taken. The impression is then sent to a lab where each porcelain
veneer is custom made to the Dr. Ace’s standards. A technician can spend
anywhere from 8-14 hours on each tooth before completion of the final veneer--
truly a custom work of art!
You
leave on the first appointment with custom prototypes (temporary dental
veneers) that are fabricated to simulate your new smile. You can expect to
leave the first appointment looking better than when you came in. At the second
appointment, the new porcelain veneers are tried in, and previewed to make sure
all expectations have been met. The
veneers are usually permanently bonded to the natural teeth at that time. A night guard is given during the followup
appointment to help protect your new, beautiful smile!
What
to Expect with Dental Veneers
Dental
veneers can last A VERY LONG TIME, depending on how well they are taken care of
by the patient. Because porcelain veneers are stronger than simple bonding,
they are also more resistant to stains and chipping. Even so, you must maintain
regular oral hygiene at home, and visit your general dentist for periodic
cleanings. The more work you have done
to your teeth, the more important these checks become, as early signs of
problems can be dealt with before more serious damage is
done.
Oral
habits that damage teeth, such as clenching/grinding, nail biting, and chewing
on hard objects can also damage your new dental veneers. Be careful with chewing ice, gnawing on
bones, seeds/nuts, and other very hard foods (such as corn on the cob). Anything that can chip your natural teeth, is
likely to damage your veneers. A custom guard, worn at night, can help protect
your teeth.
